How registers work together (Base and Satellite)
GreenSails splits floor hardware into two roles so checkout stays fast and cash stays accountable: a Base register that holds the drawer and shift, and Satellite devices that take orders on the floor.
Base Terminals
Stationary counter registers anchored to a specific physical location. These control local hardware (such as cash drawers and receipt printers), host financial shifts, and settle orders saved on Satellites.
Satellite Terminals
Mobile handheld tablets or ordering stations carried by roaming floor staff. These terminals save guest selections on the floor; payment happens at the Base register when the tab is ready to close.
Base Terminals
A Base Terminal is your central workstation for a drawer lane. Opening and closing financial shifts, manual drawer pops, receipt printing, closeout, and settling satellite orders happen at a Base. A location with multiple Base registers can run several open shifts at once: one per drawer.
Satellite Terminals
A Satellite Terminal is built for mobile speed. It is linked to a location, not to a specific parent register. Staff save orders on the handheld when any Base shift is open at the venue; when the guest is ready to pay, whichever Base register settles the tab records the sale on that register's active shift.
How GreenSails keeps the floor accountable
Three habits keep cash, access, and insights lined up with what actually happened on the floor.
1. Financial shifts (cash in and cash out)
GreenSails tracks cash in clear shift windows so drawer counts stay auditable.
Cash in (open the register)
A manager opens a shift on a Base terminal and enters the starting cash in the drawer (the opening float).
Live sales
Counter sales and settled Satellite tabs land on the Base register that takes payment. Open floor tabs wait in Recall until a Base with an open shift settles them. Multiple drawers keep separate shift timelines.
Cash out (close and reconcile)
A manager counts the drawer and submits the total. GreenSails compares that count to expected cash and shows Balanced, Over, or Short.
2. Manager sign-in on the register
Sensitive POS actions (opening or ending a financial shift, refunds, and similar) require a manager to be signed in with a manager PIN, not a separate override prompt on every action.
Cashiers work with their own PIN for ordinary checkout. When a manager needs to authorize protected work, they sign in with their manager PIN for that stretch of the shift. When they are done, lock the terminal so the next cashier can sign back in. See Taking Orders and Hub & Shifts.
3. Dashboards and AI briefings
GreenSails turns register data into summaries you can act on:
- Analytics & Insights: View sales and order volume with filters by hour, day, week, or month, plus take-out versus delivery mix. See Analytics & Insights.
- AI Briefings: Every night when your location crosses its scheduled closing hour, GreenSails writes an executive summary of the day. Managers can also generate briefs on demand, Ask AI ad-hoc questions, and continue in Analytics chat. See AI Briefings & Analytics Chat.
Working offline
Storefronts lose Wi-Fi. GreenSails keeps registers working offline, then syncs across the store when connectivity returns.
- Live updates: Price adjustments, menu updates, and sold-out alerts reach every register in your store the moment they are saved in GreenSails cloud.
- Location-wide recall: Every terminal at a venue shares order history on the device (90-day window) so any register can search, settle, or split tabs created elsewhere.
- Offline independence: If your storefront loses internet, registers do not freeze. Terminals can still process sales, hold records, and print receipts. When connectivity returns, background sync merges local sales back into GreenSails cloud without losing work. See Offline & Sync.
