POS Terminals

Set up Base (main register) and Satellite (floor handheld) terminals for each location.

GreenSails splits floor hardware into two roles. Stationary Base terminals (main registers) own the cash drawer and host financial shifts. Mobile Satellite terminals (floor handhelds) take orders at the same location and save them for a Base register to settle later.

How shifts relate to terminals

Every financial shift belongs to exactly one Base terminal. A location can run multiple open shifts at the same time when it has more than one Base register, each drawer gets its own shift window.

ConceptRule
Shift ownerOne Base terminal per shift, satellites never own shifts
Open shifts per BaseAt most one open shift per Base register at a time
Open shifts per locationMany, one per active Base drawer
Satellite tradingAllowed when at least one Base shift is open at the location
Satellite ordersSaved without a shift; assigned to a Base shift only at settlement

Satellites are linked to a location only. There is no parent-register pairing in setup or in the data model, floor staff and registers discover trading status from location-wide shift availability.

Terminals are managed under Settings → Terminals. Every terminal authenticates through a Service Account and is bound to a Location.

Checking device access

When a device is signed in, open Device profile from the terminal settings menu to review what that register is allowed to do. It shows:

  • The service account the device signed in with
  • The location the terminal is bound to
  • Enabled app modules (POS, kitchen display, or back office)
  • Every terminal layout linked to that station

Use this screen first whenever a device is "not showing what it should", most often the answer is a module or location setting on its service account.

Base Terminal Configuration Rules

A Base Terminal is your central, stationary workstation. It anchors a physical drawer lane and is the only place financial shifts can be opened and closed.

  • Location binding is mandatory. A Base Terminal must be explicitly assigned to a physical location.
  • It owns the drawer. The Base holds full administrative ownership of the physical cash drawer and the shift tied to this register.
  • One open shift per register. A Base terminal can have many closed shifts over time, but only one open shift at a time.
  • It hosts reconciliation. Shift initialization, manual drawer pops, receipt printing, and final closeout reconciliation must all be performed at a registered Base Terminal.

Select the Service Account

Choose a Service Account that has the POS module enabled and includes this terminal's location in its assigned list.

Assign the location

Bind the terminal to the physical storefront where the drawer lives.

Register as Base

Mark the terminal as a Base. It is now eligible to host shifts and settle satellite orders from the same location.

Satellite Terminal Configuration

A Satellite Terminal is built for mobile speed on the floor. It has no cash drawer and cannot open or close shifts, staff save orders on the handheld and a Base register settles them when the guest is ready to pay.

  • Location binding is mandatory. Assign the Satellite to the same physical location where its orders will be settled.
  • Service account match. The Satellite must use a Service Account that includes that location in its assigned list.
  • Location-only link. Satellites do not open shifts and are not paired to a specific Base register. They can save orders whenever any Base shift is open at the location.

Saved satellite orders appear on every Base register at that location under Satellite orders on the hub (or filtered Recall). Each Base reconciles only the tabs settled on that register at closeout, floor staff do not need to know which drawer opened first.

Select the Service Account

Choose a Service Account with the POS module enabled and this location in its assigned list.

Assign the location

Bind the Satellite to the storefront where roaming staff will take orders. That is the same venue where a Base register will settle them.

Register as Satellite

Mark the terminal as a Satellite. After the device signs in, it can save orders when any Base shift is open at that location.

When a device loses location access

If you remove a location from a device's service account, any terminal that depended on that location is disconnected and blocked until access is restored.

This protects you when a device is lost, stolen, or retired. Removing a location from the device login immediately cuts off every terminal that depended on it, you do not need to recover the hardware first.

Pair printers on the device

After the terminal is signed in, managers pair hardware under Settings (gear) on the POS, not in the dashboard Terminals list:

  • Receipt printer and cash drawer for tickets and no-sale
  • Label printer for sticky barcodes (receipt-style or Zebra-style), see Barcodes & labels

Each physical machine stores its own device mapping. Keep the terminal online if the dashboard will send label jobs to it.
